Metalsmithing/Mixed Media (11-17 years)
This workshop introduces fundamental concepts key to using metal as an art form. Students will have the opportunity to design and create original works that explore metals such as copper, brass and steel. Students learn techniques such as sawing, piercing, surface embellishments, filing and have the opportunity to utilize cold-connection and basic soldering techniques for adhering metal pieces together.
Each student will make a piece of jewelry, a sculptural work and potentially their own electric lamp. They will have the opportunity to use a wide variety of art media to enhance and transform their pieces. Projects vary each week so students are welcome to take the class multiple times.

Beginners Young Playwrights Workshop (12+ years)
Are you interested in writing your own play, but don't know where to begin? Join us for this 3-day playwriting workshop. Students are exposed to the fundamentals of theatre and playwriting through games, exercises, and creative writing. We will explore character relationships, conflict, events, and dialogue.

Advanced Young Playwrights Workshop (13+ years)

Are you having trouble developing your play or want to create a new play, but not sure where to begin? Join us for this 3-day playwriting workshop where students can continue to develop their playwriting skills through games, exercises, script readings, and creative writing. Students will explore playwriting through character relationships, conflict, setting, script analysis and storytelling.

BIG Outdoor Sculpture (11-17 years)
How do artists plan, design and build really large outdoor sculptures? In this class you’ll learn the skills to build a maquette (scale model) and transfer those ideas into a BIG outdoor art installation. Participants explore composition, scale and materials while looking to inspiration from sculptors near and far. Students will create a large outdoor sculpture which will be displayed outside the Blackbird Arts studio for public viewing!

Lights, Camera, Action! Filmmaking Camp (PLEASE NOTE: Time change from earlier posting)
Dive into the exciting world of filmmaking. Young filmmakers and actors explore acting for the camera, screenplay writing, directing, editing, and more. Students work as a team to write and produce a short film. On day three of the camp, we'll meet on site at the Traverse City Film Festival to capture "a day in the life of a filmgoer". A "premier" for friends and family (complete with popcorn!) will take place on the final day and each student will receive a DVD copy of the film.

Teen Wheel Intensive (11-17 years)
In this class designed especially for the middle years, students will explore the fun world of the wheel! Students are introduced to the basics of wheel throwing and how to center, cone, pull, and shape vessels. Participants will be encouraged to use their imagination to put together pieces in new, experimental ways. Leave with a variety of skills in your repertoire to continue creating with clay. It's a fun and engaging way to spark the imagination. All skill levels are welcome. Limited to 8 students.
